    CHILDPROOFING CHECKLIST: HOW TO BABYPROOF YOUR HOME

    Did you know that every 30 minutes, a child is taken to the emergency room after being hurt by a fallen television or tipped furniture? The Anchor It! website shares facts and figures that show how many preventable injuries and deaths occur in homes each year.  

    At PropertyePortal, we take childproofing and babyproofing very seriously. These tips can be used as a childproofing checklist as we try to increase awareness of these issues and share tips to help homeowners, parents and caregivers take the necessary precautions to keep babies and children safe from falls and other hazards!  

    Here are four areas of the home where the most-common incidents occur: 

    Family Room 

    • Use a cord shortener or wind-up for curtains and blinds. 
    • Install hardware-mounted safety gates at the top and bottom of stairways. Pressure-mounted gates may not be strong enough. 
    • Use furniture straps and bolt “top-heavy” furniture like bookcases to the floor or a stud in the wall. 

    Kitchen 

    • Keep cleaning liquids, chemicals, pesticides, dishwasher tabs, vitamins, batteries and medications in upper cabinets. Install all cabinets with childproof locks. 
    • Use appliance locks for your fridge, stove and dishwasher. 
    • Mount stove shields to create a barrier between your child and stovetop hazards like hot pots, boiling water and open flames. 
    • Cover accessible outlets with slide safety plates. 

    Outside 

    • Install locked fencing around your pool. Also utilize a safety cover for when it’s not in use and install drain covers to avoid entrapment. Always dump kidding pool water after each use. 
    • Ensure deck rails and balconies meet your area’s safety codes to prevent falls. 
    • Know the names of the plants in your yard in case your child ingests leaves, berries, etc. and consider removing poisonous foliage. 

    Bathroom 

    • Install a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) outlets near sinks and bathtubs. They stop the electrical current when an appliance gets wet. 
    • Turn your hot water thermostat below 120° F. A baby’s bath water should be 100° F. 
    • Use a toilet seat latch or lock.
